The Artist - Fiona Sheehan



Born and raised in the English Midlands Fiona has painted since her childhood.

Her father, a geologist, lectures on nature and conservation and often took Fiona to his laboratory to show her wonders under his microscope or took her out on field trips with his students where she absorbed a love of natural spaces. Though her schooling followed him into the sciences she continued to paint and draw, with a special interest in oil landscapes. Her mother introduced a love of gardens, galleries and museums with an appreciation of colour and texture from textiles to sculpture. This heady mixture has encouraged Fiona to paint and draw throughout her life.

Through the years of raising her children she continued painting, primarily in oils, studying for several years to improve drawing and painting skills. During this time paintings were usually done for commissions and from inspiration taken from regular camping and walking trips in Scotland and Wales.

During a career in archaeology, the inspiration of pure landscape was joined by that from  imprints of past peoples upon the land, historical sites and a particular interest in the many effects of water.

Now that her family is grown she has more time to devote to painting. She often concentrates on the Scottish landscape that was her first love, but a significant proportion of her timeless oils are now devoted to her adopted home city of York in beautiful North Yorkshire. Whilst these extend the range of images available to visitors to York Fiona's fresh choice of viewpoint in her paintings invite the city's residents to rediscover otherwise overlooked places. This makes her prints perfect gifts for both tourists and residents alike.

Fiona continues to study drawing and painting and is a member of York Art Society. Her work is in national and international collections. She exhibits regularly and is pleased to accept commissions.
